Short history of the Kruger National Park

On 26 March 1898, President Paul Kruger signed a proclamation establishing a sanctuary for wildlife between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers. It was an auspicious day for conservation as the first national park in Africa had been created.

Today the Kruger National Park covers an area of nearly 2,000,000 hectares and is renowned for its conservation and wildlife management techniques.
The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve comprises 53,392 hectares of private land adjoining the Kruger National Park. Since 1962, the Timbavati Association, a non profit organisation, has been dedicated to conservation by maintaining the biodiversity of species which would have continued to exist had man never encountered the land.

Currently, there are over 40 mammal species in the Timbavati including the Big Five of Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant as well as 360 species of bird life.

The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

The Klaserie Camps are part of an exclusive, privately-owned wildlife sanctuary, ‘The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve’, which in turn is part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

The reserve lies to the west of the Timbavati covering 60 000 ha on either side of the Klaserie River. The private nature of this wilderness sanctuary enables one to embrace the African bushveld in one's own time - to take in the sounds, sights and smells that make the bushveld such a unique experience.
The Kruger National Park

With nearly 2 million hectares of unrivalled diversity of life forms fuses with historical and archaeological sights – this is real Africa and the ultimate start for your African Safari!

The world-renowned Kruger National Park in South Africa offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa and the world. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, the Kruger National Park is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.

Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals.

There are also a few exclusive private lodges that have been granted concessions within the Kruger National Park.

The Sabi Sand Reserve

Established in 1948, the Sabi Sand Reserve is the birthplace of sustainable wildlife tourism in Southern Africa, and is the oldest of all the private reserves in South Africa.

It has only ever been a wilderness area and is home to a vast wildlife population, including The Big Five, and a number of endangered species too.

Flanking the Kruger National Park, animals pass unhindered between the reserves.
Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park

With greater ecological co-operation across African borders, several countries bordering South Africa have agreed to take down some fences, and those between Kruger and Mozambique's Limpopo National Park and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou, have been demolished to create the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park. This unique political innovation is creating a colossal wilderness area.

The far north of the park is the wildest and most difficult area to access and because of this, it has alluring qualities for the real adventurer.

Established in the world-famous Kruger National Park, wilderness trails allow adventurous visitors a close personal encounter with nature by traversing large areas of unspoiled wilderness on foot, under the guidance of armed and experienced trail rangers.
